Household Recycling
2009 October 12
The easiest kind of recycling is reusing or re-purposing everyday household items. Instead of throwing unwanted goods into the trashcan, consider other ways to recycle them like donating, selling or using them for a different purpose. Recycling household items is a great way to save money and help the environment.
- Gather all household items you no longer have a need for and have a yard sale. What you view as trash someone else could find very valuable. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of setting everything out and waiting for yard sale shoppers, consider donating them to the local Salvation Army or Goodwill store.
- Donate your used books to a nursing home, orphanage, hospital or any facility for that matter where they may not be able to make books available.
- Re-purpose any item you can to give it a second life. Use cereal boxes as coloring sheets
for kids, coffee cans as storage containers or old CDs as drink coasters. If you can’t find a new job for an old item, do your best to get it to a recycling plant. If everyone worked together, we could significantly decrease the volume of recyclables clogging our landfills; do your part to save the planet.

- Save the Styrofoam packing peanuts you receive in packages throughout the year and recycle them at a local shipping and packing store; they’ll reuse them instead of sending them to the landfills.
- Another great way to recycle your household waste is to make a bird feeder out of milk and juice cartons. Not only are you keeping items from going to a land-fill but your helping feed Mother Earth’s beautiful creatures!
- Dispose of old paints, batteries, motor oil and any other hazardous materials at a local waste service center. These compounds can be dangerous to soil and groundwater if dumped, so it’s important to dispose of them properly. Co
ntact your town’s waste management to arrange for an appointment to drop off these materials.

Nice POV I think recycling is a must this day and age.
Question: What is the best way to teach my kids about this? Is there a game to play a song to listen to? How do I relay this message in a way they will understand? They are 6 and 8.
THANKS!
The biggest thing, unfortunately many parents don’t understand, is children learn mostly by watching your decision making and actions, not just from what you say. I would recommend setting up a recycling program in your home, and making everyone a part of it. Best thing is to make recycling a positive experience and help them to see how your family is saving the environment and also how you are directly benefiting from it. An idea that works well in my home is having a few different cans labeled for their uses: i.e. compost, paper, aluminum, glass, and plastic (keep them in garage as it is quite a few trash bins). You can also set up a calendar and reward them for eco-friendly actions and contributions; after a certain number of eco-friendly days they get a reward. Encourage art projects with a recycling theme, using materials that would have otherwise been thrown away, bottle tops, cereal boxes, toilet rolls tubes and sweet wrappers can all be utilized in art and craft projects.
Make recycling posters and progress charts to record just how much stuff you are managing to recycle each month. Encourage younger children to recycle old clothes by implementing a dressing up box full of cast-offs they are free to customize and cut up.
Make recycling fun from the start and it will never become a chore! I was also able to find a few games online that teach children about different ways to be eco-friendly.. see below for the list. Hope this helps
